What began as a routine afternoon along the Silibwet–Bomet Road quickly turned into a dramatic chase that exposed yet another link in the illegal drug trade that continues to worry families across Bomet County.
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) arrested a 35-year-old man and recovered approximately 1,600 rolls of cannabis sativa, commonly known as bhang, following an intelligence-led operation targeting suspected drug traffickers.
The suspect, identified as Bernard Marwa, was behind the wheel of a Toyota Succeed, registration number KDR 477X, when detectives moved in to intercept the vehicle. However, instead of stopping, the driver allegedly stepped on the accelerator and sped off towards Kapsimotwa Shopping Centre, triggering a tense pursuit.
Witnesses said the chase attracted the attention of residents who watched as the vehicle raced through the area before reaching a narrow road where the occupants had little room to maneuver. Realizing they were cornered, the occupants abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot.
While two passengers managed to disappear into nearby surroundings, detectives caught up with and arrested the driver.A search of the abandoned vehicle revealed eight bags packed with rolls of bhang, a haul investigators estimate at about 1,600 rolls.
The arrest comes at a time when local leaders and residents have increasingly voiced concern over the availability of narcotic drugs among young people in parts of Bomet County. Community members say the trade has been quietly thriving, with traffickers often using private vehicles and remote routes to move the illegal substances.
Security agencies have in recent months intensified operations aimed at dismantling drug distribution networks, arguing that narcotics are contributing to rising cases of school dropouts, crime, and substance abuse among youth.
Police have detained both the vehicle and the recovered drugs as exhibits while investigations continue. Detectives are also pursuing the two suspects who escaped during the operation.
For residents of Bomet, the latest seizure is being viewed not only as a victory against drug trafficking but also as a reminder of the ongoing battle to protect communities from the far-reaching effects of narcotics.
