Tragedy struck Kapcheluch Village in Ndaraweta Ward, Bomet Central, on Friday afternoon when two young siblings died in a house fire that reduced their family home to ashes.

The children, aged 7 and 2, were alone in the house when the fire broke out at around 3:00 p.m. Their mother was reportedly working on a nearby farm at the time.

According to Teganda Assistant Chief John Tonui, the timber-built, three-roomed house was quickly engulfed in flames. Neighbours raised the alarm and attempted to put out the fire but were overwhelmed by its intensity.

Police officers from Silibwet Police Station and a fire engine responded to the distress calls, but by the time they arrived, the blaze had already destroyed the house completely. The children were burned beyond recognition.

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire. However, police confirmed that two cooking gas cylinders and a charcoal stove were recovered from the scene.

Bomet County Police Commander Edward Imbwaga confirmed the incident, saying a team of investigators has been dispatched to determine the cause of the fire.

The bodies of the two children were taken to the Longisa County Hospital mortuary.

Commander Imbwaga urged parents and guardians to avoid leaving young children unattended, especially in homes where flammable materials or cooking equipment are present.

The local community has been left in mourning as families and neighbors come to terms with the tragic loss.
