Kisumu County, Nyakach Sub-County – A tragic road accident claimed the lives of four people on the spot at Kibuon area when a 14-seater matatu collided with a sugarcane truck in the early hours of the morning.

Among the deceased are three students and a matatu conductor, whose lives were cut short in the devastating crash. According to Nyanza Region Traffic Enforcement Officer Peter Maina, the accident was severe, leaving the wreckage of the matatu mangled beyond recognition.

Eyewitnesses at the scene recounted the harrowing moments before the crash. The matatu, carrying passengers to Kisumu town, was attempting to overtake another vehicle when it came head-on with the heavily loaded sugarcane truck. In a desperate attempt to avoid the impact, the matatu driver swerved, but it was too late—the collision was inevitable.

Bystanders rushed to the scene, hoping to rescue any survivors, but for the four victims, it was already too late. Several other passengers sustained critical injuries and were quickly rushed to Nyabondo Mission Hospital for emergency treatment.

Traffic officers arrived shortly after, working tirelessly to clear the wreckage and restore order on the busy highway. The tragic loss has left the local community in mourning, especially the families of the young students who had bright futures ahead of them.

Authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution, particularly on high-speed roads, to prevent further tragedies. Investigations into the accident are ongoing, with officials looking into possible causes, including reckless driving or mechanical failure.

As families grapple with the devastating loss, the accident serves as a grim reminder of the dangers lurking on Kenyan roads and the urgent need for improved road safety measures.
