The origin of the differences has been expounded thus: “By the end of the 1st Century AD there were in Judaism two Canons, or lists of Sacred Books, a shorter Palestinian, Jamnia and a Longer Alexandrian Canon represented by the LXX. The early Christian Church adopted the Alexandrian Canon; but the reformers following a minority view among the Fathers, decided to revert to the Palestinian Canon. The respective results were the Catholic and Protestant canons.
It was in the Canon of Trent (8 April 1546) that the Roman Catholics established definitely the Canon of Scripture. It was here that the Roman Catholics Church assumed a clear and definitive position as to which books were to be included in the Bible.
The Roman Catholic Church accept 46 as the Canonical Old Testament. Most Protestants accept a canon of 39 books. Thus there is a difference of seven Books-Deuterocanonical or Apocryphal books. These books are Tobit, Judith, Wisdom, Sirak, Baruk, 1-2 Maccabees-
In general the reformers expressed doubt about the deuterocanonical books but only in the course of Protestant- Catholic Polemics were these books completely rejected. Recently, in Protestantism, there are signs of a return to the milder attitude of the origin of Reformers toward the deuterocanonical books.
Roman Catholics, Protestants and Orthodox; all accept the same canon of 27 New Testament Book.
