President William Ruto has raised concern over the growing conversion of agricultural land into residential plots, warning that unchecked subdivision is undermining food security and reducing farm productivity.

Speaking at Mabera Grounds in Kuria West Constituency, Migori County, during the issuance of keys to 60 beneficiaries under the Affordable Housing Programme, the President urged rural communities to adopt planned housing projects to preserve arable land.

He noted that expanding affordable housing initiatives in rural areas would play a critical role in curbing land fragmentation and boosting agricultural output.

In the same address, the Head of State issued a stern warning to parents who fail to enroll their children in school, directing National Government Administration Officers to collaborate with security agencies to enforce compliance.

He reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring universal access to education, describing it as the most powerful tool for social equality, and pointing out that over Sh700 billion is allocated annually to the sector.

The President also criticised the continued practice in some arid and semi-arid regions where children are engaged in herding livestock instead of attending school.

Later, while commissioning the Piny-Owacho Level 3 Hospital in Uriri Constituency, President Ruto pledged that the facility would be fully equipped with the necessary medical supplies and personnel.

He further called on residents to register with the Social Health Authority (SHA) to access universal healthcare, revealing that the scheme has disbursed Sh2.4 billion to hospitals in Migori County over the past year.

The President also presided over the groundbreaking of the Mabera Modern Market and inspected ongoing construction at Kegonga Sub-County Hospital, a Sh345 million project.

Other development initiatives outlined include the construction of a Sh200 million modern market in Kegonga town, Sh150 million hostels at Kegonga KMTC to support medical students, and a Sh28 billion allocation to Migori County for housing, markets and student accommodation.

Additionally, Sh2.3 billion has been set aside to expand electricity connectivity to households.

In neighbouring Homa Bay County, the President launched the Sondu–Homa Bay electricity transmission line in Ndiwa Constituency, aimed at strengthening power supply in the region.

President Ruto concluded by condemning leaders who advance ethnic-based politics, urging them instead to prioritise national cohesion and development.
