Over the years, Raila Odinga has repeatedly appeared in the Kenyan politics, contesting and losing elections, enduring betrayals, and weathering political storms that would have made one lose hope in the political arena.

This means that each setback for him is a stepping stone for his next political career. In Kenya, it would be hard to mention the strong opposition without naming Raila Odinga.

His recent defeat in the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship election sparked mixed reactions across the country with some being relieved by the defeat, while others are disappointed, claiming that he was the best candidate for the role.

The key question now is whether Raila Odinga will return to challenge President William Ruto’s administration. There is speculation that he might revive his role in the opposition, organizing protests and demanding greater accountability from the government.

Alternatively, Odinga could set his sights on another ambitious goal, potentially launching a sixth bid for the presidency. With his political future uncertain, these possibilities remain a central point of discussion among both his supporters and critics.

Raila has been perfectly playing opposition roles between government regimes, especially after the 2013 and 2017 elections, where he contested for the presidency but lost and he became a leading voice in the opposition against the ruling government of Jubilee.

Even though other opposition leaders play a crucial role in criticizing the government, some of the issues that the Kenya Kwanza administration have implemented could have been sharpened fully by Mr. Odinga if he was still seating on the opposition office due to his influential power.

It is true that many Kenyans today are still grappling with difficult economic times, with basic necessities such as food and shelter becoming increasingly out of reach.

A 2024 survey showed that Kenya's inflation rate dropped from 6.63% in December 2023 to 2.99% in December 2024. However, despite this drop, many Kenyans continue to struggle with poverty.

Unemployment amongst youths remains a major issue, with even graduates finding it difficult to secure jobs. Many are being forced to find innovative ways to survive in an environment that’s unfavorable for businesses. The GenZ abductions was also a key issue affecting the country, thanks to the remaining opposition leaders for fighting for their release.

It is now critical for Raila Odinga to return to the opposition and help hold the government accountable, as Kenyans feel increasingly taxed by President Ruto’s administration.

If Odinga and Kalonzo Musyoka unite against the Kenya Kwanza government, it could reduce corruption and the misappropriation of government funds and hence ensuring the government delivers the best that, we, the voters demand.

The Kenya Kwanza government is also facing significant challenges with large trade deficits, managing debt levels, and diversifying the economy beyond agriculture. These issues need urgent attention, and it can be achieved by a strong opposition.

Therefore, Raila Odinga needs to reclaim his role of leadership among the opposition and use his voice to battle for Kenyans' rights.

With his vast influence and unyielding stance against such acts as extrajudicial killings and kidnappings, Odinga can utilize the chance to campaign for more protection for citizens and safeguard their safety.

His return to the opposition can provide the type of leadership that can keep the government in check, especially at a time when the majority of Kenyans feel their rights and security are under attack.
