In a transformative move aimed at empowering education and uplifting vulnerable groups, Bomet Central Constituency has disbursed Ksh 55 million in bursaries under the National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF).
The funds have been distributed across all 24 sub-locations in what is being hailed as the most equitable and transparent allocation in the region’s history.
The initiative, championed by area Member of Parliament Hon. Richard Kilel, adopts a grassroots-oriented formula that ensures no learner is left behind.
“We have adopted a community-based model where every sub-location gets its fair share. This ensures that no student is left behind because of where they come from. It is the best way for our people to access their rightful share of development at their very doorstep,” said Hon. Kilel.
The bursary selection process was conducted in collaboration with Chiefs, Assistant Chiefs, Village Elders, and community members—an approach that has significantly boosted transparency and reduced favoritism, a step the legislator strongly endorsed.
Hon. Kilel further revealed that his administration is finalizing a plan to roll out a medical cover for the elderly and persons living with disabilities, following the bursary programme.
“We’re finalizing a programme that will see over 500 elderly persons and people living with disabilities receive Social Health Authority (SHA) cover for two years. This too will be community-led, allowing residents to participate in identifying the most deserving beneficiaries,” he stated.
The dual initiative has sparked widespread praise from constituents and local leaders, who see it as a shift toward people-centered development.
Joan Cherotich, a resident of Silibwet Township and mother of two, applauded the new model, noting that the previous administration lacked transparency in beneficiary selection.
“Before, bursaries felt like a lottery. But now, with the village elders involved, even ordinary families like mine are benefiting. My daughter’s fees were paid this term, and I can’t express how much relief that brings,” she said.
Local administrators also lauded the efforts, calling it a model for other constituencies to emulate.
With the bursary model already in effect and the SHA programme on the horizon, Hon. Kilel emphasized his commitment to transformative leadership rooted in community needs.
“This is just the beginning. Our people deserve more, and we are laying a strong foundation for lasting impact in education, health, and social welfare,” he assured.
This move positions Bomet Central as a trailblazer in effective public fund utilization and inclusive governance, setting a new standard for grassroots development across the country.
