Bomet Kenya - President William Ruto and leaders from across the Rift Valley have paid glowing tribute to former Chepalungu Member of Parliament, Ambassador John Koech, who passed away on Monday while undergoing treatment at Nairobi Hospital.
In a heartfelt message, President Ruto described the late Koech as a dedicated and visionary leader who left an indelible mark on his constituency.
“Mheshimiwa John Koech was a hardworking leader who served the people of Chepalungu with dedication. He was focused, progressive, and development-conscious. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends at this sad moment. Rest in peace,” the President said.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen echoed the President’s sentiments, describing Koech as a man who epitomized servant leadership.
"I'm deeply saddened by the news of his demise. I wish to extend my heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and the people of Chepalungu, whom he ably represented in Parliament for many years," said Murkomen.
He noted that Koech wore many hats during his public life, but remained deeply connected to his constituents — a quality that earned him the distinction of being the longest-serving MP from Chepalungu.
Current Chepalungu MP Victor Koech said the former legislator’s passing is a profound loss to the constituency.
“Ambassador Koech was a towering pioneer in Chepalungu. He spearheaded numerous development projects in education, health, and infrastructure. His death is a significant blow to the entire community,” he said.
Former Bomet Governor Isaac Ruto offered a deeply personal tribute, recalling the spirited political rivalry he shared with Koech.
“We fiercely competed for the Chepalungu seat — I unseated him twice, and he unseated me once. Despite the intense rivalry, we remained friends and shared ideas on how to improve our constituency. I learned a lot from him. He served with integrity and never sought to enrich himself,” said Ruto.
Bomet Senator Wakili Hillary Sigei described Koech’s death as a loss not just for the region, but for the entire country.
“He offered wise counsel and had a countrywide perspective. His passing is a big blow to Bomet and Kenya as a whole,” the senator remarked.
Bomet Governor Professor Hillary Barchok said he was shocked by the news of Koech’s death and assured the family of his continued support.
“Ambassador Koech had a genuine heart for the people of Bomet. He once even vied for the gubernatorial seat, showing his deep commitment to county leadership. We will stand with the family in prayer during this difficult time,” he said.
As the nation mourns, the memory of Ambassador John Koech lives on — not just as a seasoned politician, but as a servant leader who placed people above politics, and community above self.
