The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has released a detailed update on investigations into the fatal road accident that claimed the life of former Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo, shedding new light on the sequence of events leading to the crash.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, December 16, the DCI said preliminary findings show that the accident involved Jirongo’s motor vehicle, registration number KCZ 305U, and a Climax Company Ltd public service vehicle (PSV) bus, registration number KCU 576A.

The collision occurred at about 2:19 a.m. along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway and resulted in a head-on impact.

“The collision resulted in a head-on impact that pushed the deceased’s vehicle about 25 metres from the point of impact, while the PSV bus came to a stop approximately 50 metres away,” the DCI said.

Following the crash, a joint team of homicide detectives and forensic experts from the National Forensic Laboratory was deployed to the scene. The team conducted preliminary examinations, secured exhibits, and obtained CCTV footage from Eagol Petrol Station near the scene of the accident.

According to the DCI, initial analysis of the footage shows that Jirongo drove into the petrol station at 2:18:40 a.m. from the Nairobi direction but did not refuel. At 2:19:10 a.m., he stopped at the station’s exit and, nine seconds later, made a right turn back towards Nairobi.

“At 02:19:25 a.m., the CCTV captured the PSV bus ramming into the deceased’s vehicle,” the statement said.

Detectives have since interrogated the PSV driver, Tyrus Kamau Githinji, who had earlier recorded a statement at the Naivasha Traffic Base. The DCI said Githinji has been released on cash bail pending further investigations into the offence of causing death by dangerous driving.

He is expected to report back to the traffic base on December 22, 2025, for further police action.

In addition, investigators have recorded statements from the petrol station’s night guard and fuel attendant, both of whom gave personal accounts of the moments preceding the crash. The forensic team is also scheduled to revisit the scene for further analysis as part of the ongoing inquiry.

The DCI said detectives are examining Jirongo’s movements prior to the accident, including statements from individuals who interacted with him earlier that night.

Among the areas of interest is a meeting at Karen Oasis Bar and Restaurant in Nairobi, where the former MP was reported to have been before embarking on his journey.

Further analysis of the CCTV footage is ongoing, with additional statements expected from passengers aboard the Climax bus and other witnesses who were in the area at the time.

“The Directorate of Criminal Investigations conveys its condolences to the family, friends, and relatives of Hon. Cyrus Jirongo and assures the public of its commitment to conduct thorough, impartial, and credible investigations in accordance with the Constitution of Kenya and the rule of law,” the agency said.

Jirongo’s death has drawn nationwide attention and prompted an outpouring of tributes from across the political divide. The 64-year-old, a former YK92 leader and two-term Lugari MP, died at the scene of the early-morning crash while reportedly travelling alone.

Earlier, the Climax bus driver told investigators that a Mercedes-Benz vehicle entered his lane while attempting to avoid traffic congestion, leaving him with little room to manoeuvre as the bus carried 65 passengers.

Authorities have maintained that investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances and any potential criminal liability arising from the incident.
